2017 VW Golf Alltrack First Drive
Sept. 28, Joliet IL: VW’s Alltrack, a Golf SportWagen with a .6-inch lift kit and all-wheel-drive, proved its mettle on scenic Route 66 near Joliet’s Autobahn Country Club. The event: the Midwest Automotive Media Association’s Fall Rally. That’s where your correspondent drove Volks’ wagon with an off-road mode and hill descent control
The first thing you’ll notice: the baked-in Golf goodness. VW’s 1.8-liter TSI engine with 170 hp beats Antoine Fuqua’s remade Magnificent Seven in the coltish entertainment category. That’s because this gas-fired turbocharged four-cylinder mill hooks up to the AWD system via VW’s six-speed Direct Shift Gearbox. The result: it’s a tad gritty when gently spurred; ready to gallop when you dig deeper.
The extra drive gear is neatly tucked underneath—no ugly hardware exposed. Its plush commodious cargo bay with an adjustable floor that rivals larger vehicles in the space race. While the Alltrack isn’t designed to tackle the terrain of a John Sturges’ Western, it’s ready to handle highways and soft-roading. It’s well equipped at $27,770.
In the Pink: Hashtag Beetle’s Name Evokes Bug Heritage
#PinkBeetle's Name Explained
According to VW’s product specialist Will Gock, the Fresh Fuchsia Metallic “Hashtag PinkBeetle” (yep, that’s what it is called) evokes the original Bug’s playful past. In a nod to “Punch Buggy” and “Slug Bug,” VW chose “Hashtag,” as used on Twitter to identify a subject, to update an old game. Back in the 1960s, the first person spotting a Beetle yelled “slug bug” and then punched someone. Today, one’s more likely to inform others when spying a 2017 Beetle’s eye-catching pink color and that iconic shape by sending a Tweet—hence the #.
