Oct 25, 2016 Herndon VA: Judge Charles Breyer of the U.S. District Court for northern California granted final approval of a Consent Decree between VW and the U.S. Dept. of Justice on behalf of the EPA, state of California, FTC and others. Judge Breyer says the settlement is fair, reasonable and adequate. It gets polluting cars off the road. VW has until 2019 to fix or buyback 85% of 475,000 vehicles. About 490,000 people are eligible for compensation—a figure that includes multiple owners of owners of some cars. The case involves VW’s “clean diesel” marketing, sales, product liability and litigation. VW’s settlement has several parts: one, $10.033 billion for vehicle buyback and compensation to consumers; two, $4.7 billion in air pollution remediation programs; three, $1.21 billion for VW dealers and four, $603 million to individual U.S. states. VW says implementation of this TDI settlement begins immediately. Customers with eligible vehicles may submit claims using a paper form (available at www.VWCourtSettlement.com or by calling 1-844-98CLAIM) or via an online portal at www.VWCourtSettlement.com. Once a customer’s claim is approved, a customer can schedule appointments with settlement specialists assigned to dealership locations.
