Fix for 70,000 U.S. 2.0-liter VW Diesel Vehicles Approved $3 Billion Civil/Criminal Penalty Agreement Near Washington Jan. 6, 2017: The EPA approved a two-stage fix for about 70,000 2.0-liter TDI vehicles utilizing the EA288 turbocharged four-cylinder diesel power source. This "modular" engine superceded the EA189 mill used before the 2015 model year. Vehicles covered are the 2015 Beetle, Golf, Jetta, Passat and Audi A3. The remedy involves a software change that's available now. Later, VW will install additional software updates plus new hardware including a diesel particulate filter, diesel oxidation catalyst and NOx catalyst. Fixes for another 400,000 VW/Audi TDI vehicles with the older 2.0-liter EA189 TDI introduced for 2009 and used through the 2014 model year await federal approval. Reuters reports a $3 billion penalty that to resolves VW's the U.S. government's civil and criminal investigation into the German firm's diesel-emissions cheating might be announced next week. VW and the Justice Department aim to reach an agreement before President Barack Obama leaves office.
