VW Seeks New I.D., Reveals BUZZ Micro Bus Concept
FBI Arrests VW Executive
Audi’s Slinky Q8 Concept Applauded at its Detroit Show Intro
VW’s American CEO, Hinrich Woebcken, fielded questions about the brand’s shift toward electric vehicles and news that the FBI arrested Oliver Schmidt, an executive who played a central role in deflecting regulators from the real cause of its excess diesel emissions.
Woebcken says VW is a good corporate citizen and will cooperate with U.S. investigations into Schmidt’s alleged wrongdoing.
Meanwhile, VW designer Klaus Bischoff, VW’s director of design, answered questions about its I.D. Buzz with its whimsical dancing woman atop its dashboard. The BUZZ is a stunningly clean modern interpretation of VW’s iconic Bus. The two-tone BUZZ has a V-shield-like cab-forward front and lounge-like rear seat.
When asked why VW didn’t show a “real bus,” Woebcken replied, “ask marketing.” VW, he said, is looking toward electric vehicle as a replacement for diesels because ever-stricter emissions standards require significant investments in that technology. So VW is looking ahead—toward E-Mobility predicting a 270-mile range (EPA cycle) with the I.D. BUZZ. And of course, electric vehicles meet its U.S. consent decree obligations.
