VW’s January 2018 Sales Up 5.2%, Audi Rises 9.9%, SUV SurgeBackground: January commence a cool start. Automakers posted a 1.2% increase in sales with light trucks gaining and auto sales sliding. Light trucks accounted for 67% of U.S. light-vehicle deliveries—a new record high for January. VW posted a 5.2% increase in year-over-year sales (24,744). Audi gained 9.9% (14,511). The VW Group of America (VW, Audi, Porsche) posted a 6.7% increase (44,318). VW reports SUVs comprised 52% of its sales. Its 2018 Tiguan is the sales king at 6,336 units, Jetta is second at 4,531 (-33.8%) and Atlas third at 4,303. Passat sales were off 58.7% (2,434). Audi says 57% of its deliveries were SUVS. Its best seller is the Q5 crossover at 4,088 units (+12%), the three-row Q7 second at 2,877 (+19%) and the A4 sedan third at 2,024 (+17%). The snazzy new A5 (coupe, Sportback, cabriolet) found 1,599 takers (+426%).
