VW’s Enchanting April: U.S. Sales Up, German Management Shakeup
VW reports a 4.5% increase in U.S. sales (28,797). Leading the pace: Tiguan (7,637), Atlas (5,404) and Jetta (4,313). VW’s product mix: 50% SUVs. VW expects a rebound in Jetta sales, when the new 2019 model arrives during May 2018. The Golf Alltrack/SportWagen, last year’s sales sensation, posted 1,481 deliveries (-58.4%).
Audi posted a 2.1% sales increase (19,104). The Q5 (5,275), A4 (3,126) and Q7 (3,083) tops its list. The A5 couple, Sportback and convertible posted a 115% increase (2,169).
Emissions Update
VW reached diesel-emissions settlements in Canada and Maryland. A judge discarded Florida and Utah diesel-related suits against VW.
In Europe, prosecutors seized files during searches of Porsche’s offices—part of an investigation into VW’s diesel fraud. Powertrain development chief, Joerg Kerner, was arrested. Prosecutors claim three suspects and Porsche itself knew that the Audi-developed 3.0-liter V-6 TDI used illegal emissions devices.
Audi Fuel Pump Trouble
Audi is recalling 1.16 million vehicles worldwide due to coolant pump fires. This covers 342,000 U.S. vehicles with the 2.0-liter FSI engine model years 2012-17 such as the A5, Q5, A4 and A6. This is the second pump-related recall. An earlier action altered pump power software to deactivate the pump if blocked by debris. This time the concern is electrical shorts caused by moisture within the pump.
New Logo, New Direction
The people-car company will revamp its familiar logo as part of a larger “New Volkswagen” image makeover. VWAG jettisoned its CEO Matthias Mueller and chose a former BMW manager, Herbert Diess as its new Group chief. Diess, who moves up from VW brand chief, will continue that role until a new leader is announced.
Bosch’s Develops Diesel Emissions Breakthrough
Engineers say they’ve developed a new diesel exhaust system that cuts emissions far below Euro 2020 targets. Optimum thermal management of exhaust temperatures cuts oxides of nitrogen emissions to 1/10th the legal limit. Bosch claims no new hardware is required.
