There’s VW in Its Future: WPP Picked as VW’s North American Ad Agency
November 26: Ad agency mega-firm WPP won VW’s North American creative account. WPP owns J. Walter Thompson, Grey, Ogilvy & Mather and Young & Rubicam. It recently lost the Ford account.
VW says it centralized its marketing operations to four hubs: Berlin, New York, Beijing and Sao Paulo. Rival Omnicom (includes DDB, the think-small agency behind those famous Beetle ads) continues as VW’s global agency. Omnicom/DDB lost its hold on VW’s Canadian and Mexican accounts, which now go to WPP.
Of historical note: JWT’s advertising trope was testimonial ads for products like Lux soap. It created the famous “There’s a Ford in Your Future” campaign. Y&R did the “stuck on Band-Aid” jingle and O&M gained notice for its “Man in the Hathaway Shirt” campaign.
