Milestone: VW Builds the 500,000th American-made Passat During July VW says Gestamp, a company that manufactures automotive metal components, will construct a new facility near its American plant. Gestamp will invest $180 to triple its current Chattanooga capacity producing external metal skins for VW’s upcoming mid-size crossover. VW also forecasts adding 510 jobs. Meanwhile, VW’s Chattanooga facility will build its 500,000th Passat during July. Currently, Volkswagen relies on several stamped-metal producers to supply its Passat body components. This new expanded partnership means all of the external sheet metal stamping will take place at VW’s Enterprise South expansion site adjacent to its Chattanooga factory. This will reduce transportation costs. Gestamp Chattanooga will offer hot stamping technology. This state-of-the-art process produces lighter, but harder metal panels. This in turn, reduces fuel consumption, decreases vehicle pollution and increases occupant protection.
