VW CEO Meets with EPA Chief, , Jan. 7: VW says CEO Matthias Mueller meets with EPA chief Gina McCarthy next week Wednesday in Washington. The meeting follows news that the U.S. Department of Justice sued VW for $48 billion. It’s the highest-level talk between VW and the EPA, since the EPA charged VW with violations of the Clean Air Act in September.
DOJ Sues VW for $48 billion Jan. 4: The DOJ filed a $48 billion civil suit against VW. It accuses VW of four counts that violate EPA rules including tampering with emissions devices and failure to report violations. The DOJ’s math adds fines for each non-compliant diesel vehicle (2.0-liter and 3.0-liter TDIs) as much as $37,500 per vehicle, fines for each defeat device on these vehicles and penalties up to $37,500 per day per vehicle.
VW Might Buy Back 115,000 Diesels Jan. 7: A German newspaper reports that VW will have to buy back about 115,000 diesel cars in the U.S. VW hasn’t confirmed the report. Speculation is that VW cannot cook up fixes acceptable to the EPA for all of its roughly 500,000 diesel vehicles involved in the diesel emissions cheating scandal.
