VW of America’s Dec. 2016 Sales Up 20.3%, Down 7.6% for the YearVWoA posted its second straight monthly year-over-year sales increase for Dec. 2016 at 37,229 units. Its Tiguan CUV did well with its best-ever monthly figure: 5,575 units. The Golf family got a boost from SportWagen/Alltrack: deliveries up 271.4% (3,332 units). Passat sales: up 101.4% at 7,241 units. For the calendar year, GTI and Tiguan sales were the best ever, says VW: 23,934 and 43,638 respectively. Last year, VW’s Dec. sales were down for a variety of reasons such as the TDI (diesel) stop-sale and reduced incentives. The numbers suggest that adding all-wheel-drive to the SportWagen revved up interest. VW hasn’t said whether new or revamped products, TDI owners spending their buyback money on a new VW or promotions such as low-cost financing persuaded folks to buy Volks.

Its CUV/SUV lineup grew mirroring an industry trend: flagship Q7 sales up 60.9% for 2016—30,563 units. Audi introduces a new Q5 CUV, its best-selling model, during 2017.
