Brand Chief Ron Stach Sacked
Ron Stach, VW's U.S. sales chief got the boot. Derrick Hatami, who joined VW last June as sales and marketing boss, will fill the post. VW hasn't said why Stach and the carmaker parted ways. Lackluster car sales certainly didn't help. Read on... VW Group Reports U.S. December and Full-Year SalesCar-heavy VW’s year-over-year December 2017 sales slid 18.7%. Industrywide, car sales were down 17%, whereas light vehicle deliveries were down .5%. VW claims 48% of its December sales were crossovers—the Atlas and Tiguan. The Passat dropped 58% and the Jetta skidded 45%. For the year, VW’s sales rose 5.2% (339,676). For comparison, Toyota sold 407,594 RAV4 compact CUVs. One bright spot: the VW Group gained the most volume of any carmaker (34,005). Audi continued its sales hot streak up 16.3% for December. Its yearly total (226,511) increased 7.8%. During December, Audi’s Q5 crossover overtook VW’s Jetta as the group’s best-selling model (7,531 vs. 7,233). The Atlas came in third (6070), 2018 Tiguan fourth (5,770) and the Q7 not far behind (4,838). The group’s incentive spending per vehicle sold was down 16% ($3,808). VW offered its three “zero” promotion—no money down, no interest and no first-month payment. Cuts 2018 Tiguan’s Price . . . Plans More CUVsVW announced a 2018 Tiguan price cut: $600 (S trim), $2,180 (SE) and $1460 (SEL). The 2018 Tiguan’s base price including destination: $25,495. VW's top American executive, Hinrich Woebcken, sees lower prices as means to get people to shop VW. Meanwhile, dealers say VW showed them a “smaller” five-seat Tiguan and a coupe-like five-seat Atlas. VW hasn’t said when it will expand its CUV lineup.
