VW’s 2019 Arteon: Elegance and Character at 2018 Chicago Auto Show

VW claims it’s staging and American comeback built on an ambitious two-models-a-year assault. The first prong: the affordable 2019 Jetta premiere in Detroit; the second: the richer folks Arteon five-seat fastback/liftback North American debut in Chicago. Think of the latter as a four-door Karmann Ghia. Look closely at either new VW and you’ll notice expensive character in metal that’s relatively affordable.
Available later this year with a turbocharged 268-hp mill mated to an eight-speed automatic, the Arteon has optional 4Motion all-wheel-drive. There’s a wealth of details in VW’s design-forward, driver-focused “coupe.” One, argues VW design guru Klaus Bischoff, is the wrap around hood with show-car contours. These are achieved through extra stamping steps that aren’t associated with mainstream vehicles. He’s also proud of this VW’s new face, which runs grille elements through the 3-D headlamps. VW’s manufacturing experts told Bischoff this couldn’t be done, but they did it. It looks fantastic.
Bischoff's Finger Points, Devilish Detail: VW Doesn't Cut Corners at the Undercut
VW expresses styling confidence and manufacturing prowess through sleek dimensions that increase rear headroom compared with the VW CC, reduce front and rear overhangs, elongate each side’s double undercut lines, a solid rear spoiler, functional lower front grille ducts, special noise-cutting side glass and hand-filled-and-finished rear quarter panel edges.
Bischoff, who drives an Arteon, claims it’s addictive. He argues that design plays a major role in VW’s comeback plan. Add assistance features, fashion-forward dimensional perforated ventilated leather seating surfaces, precise exterior cut lines and mirror-like finish and you cannot believe your eyes; VW created an impressive chariot.
