It’s the tale of two different vehicle sales results. VWoA inches forward with an advance in year-over-year deliveries. Dec. sales were up 5.8% (32,047). For the year, sales were 354,064 (+4.2%). SUV sales comprised 47% of that total vs. 23% last year. Audi didn’t fare as well.
VW’s Tiguan nameplate (new long wheelbase and Limited) was its most popular this year (103,022 units). The Jetta, its longtime best-seller, came in second. Jetta deliveries slid during the early rollout of the 2019 seventh-generation version. Dec. figures: the Golf family declined (-46%; 2,425), Jetta surged (10,261; +42%), Beetle slipped (917; -10%), Passat increased (3,116; +3.3%), new Tiguan charged (8,353; +45%) and Atlas rose (6,717; +11%).
Audi says certification delays for U.S. vehicles caused a backlog, short inventories and lower sales. Dec. deliveries were 22,795 (-16%). For 2018, sales were off 1.4% (223,323). Audi expects better figures during 2019, when it expands its SUV lineup and can deliver A6,A7 and A8 models.
For Dec., Audi’s Q5 was its best seller (8,143; +8%) followed by the Q7 ( 4,030; -17%), A6 (3,058; +55%) and A4 (1,881; -56%). The Q3 crossover dropped (620; -74%). A new A3 arrives during 2019.
