Los Angeles: Volkswagen introduced its ID. Space Vizzon electric concept. It’s an aerodynamic vehicle built on the firm’s MEB modular electric-drive matrix. The slippery shape extends its range. The battery, integrated into the vehicle’s floor, supplies power to a rear-mounted 275-hp motor. This spins the rear wheels for about 300 miles on a charge.
VW says designers lowered the hood because they didn’t need space for a conventional radiator and engine. Ducts, panels and diffusers manage airflow. ID signature lighting is interactive. A driver with smartphone as a key can open doors by touching flush illuminated surfaces.
The interior celebrates sustainable materials. AppleSkin leather-like material, developed “in house,” uses the residue of apple-juice production. It covers the center console armrests. VW says it can replace 20% of polyurethane interior trim with this skin.
VW says this longer than a Tiguan concept previews an upcoming ID model for the U.S.
Audi will eliminate about 15% of its German workforce in order to boost its earnings. This should help it make the costly transition to electric cars. Audi says it will cut some positions via early retirements. Approximately 50,000 German Audi employees have job guarantees through 2029.
