VW Offers U.S. Diesel Owners $1,000, Goodwill Package
VW Diesel Scandal Grows: EPA’s Second Violation Notice Means Stop-Sale Order of Porsche, Audi and VW 3.0-Liter V-6 Diesels
VW Recalls 2015 and 2016 TSI Gas-Engine Golf, Beetle, Jetta and Passats
VW Says Some European Cars Flubbed CO2 Emissions Compliance
Nov. 9, 2015 (Reuters): VW will offer elegible owners of models equipped with its 2.0-liter TDIi diesel engines a $500 prepaid Visa card, a $500 dealership card, and three years of roadside assistance. See www.vwdieselinfo.com for details. VW says customers will not have to sign anything that would relinquish their legal rights. The Visa card can be used for any purpose; dealership cards cover parts and service at VW stores.
Nov. 4, 2015: VW issued a stop-sale order for V-6 diesel vehicles that the EPA says violate emission rules. U.S. dealers cannot sell new or used V-6 TDI models sold by Porsche, Audi and VW, model years 2014-2016, 2013 Touareg too. The carmakers says it's reviewing the EPA's findings.
Nov. 2, 2015, the EPA issued a second Notice of Violation of the Clean Air Act to VW. This time, the EPA alleges that 10,000 VW, Porsche, and Audi models equipped with 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engines have one or more auxiliary emissions control devices that VW did not disclose on its certification of conformity for diesel versions of the Touareg, Cayenne, A6, A8, Q7 and Q5. Model-year span: 2014 to 2016.
The EPA initiated testing light-duty diesels available in the USA on Sept. 25. It says VW’s V-6 turbo diesels that circumvented emission testing. These mills transitioned to “normal mode” after testing increasing nitrogen of oxides emissions up to nine times the EPA standard.
VW’s same-day press release disputed the EPA’s claim. It said, “VWAG wishes to emphasize that no software has been installed on the 3-liter V6 diesel power units to alter emissions characteristics in a forbidden manner.”
On Nov. 3, 2015, VW's press release discussed a different pollution problem: irregularities in carbon dioxide levels affecting about 800,000 unnamed vehicles. These European-market models likely don't meet their fuel-economy targets.
VW is also recalling about 92,000 U.S.-market Beetles, Golfs, GTI, Jetta and Passats utilizing its Gen-3 EA888 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged gas engines or TSI. A rear camshaft lobe could shear stalling engine and increasing braking effort. VW says a "production lot" is defective.
In happier news, VW's October USA sales posted a slim increase. While sales of the Golf TSI/TDI and Jetta were down, Passat and Tiguan gained. Massive incentives helped VW dealers sell gas-powered cars and SUVs, besting last year's October sales surge.
