VW’s New Direction: Budd-e Volts-Wagen charges ahead, David Detweiler appointed American legal eagle, Audi presents its diesel fix, VW’s European diesel recall begins Feb. 3: The tidy Microbus-like Budd-e--a hit at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year--will be produced. Built on VW’s new Modular Electric Platform (MEB) this “pure” electric concept version treks 373 miles on a single charge of its flat battery. Looking like a pint-size modern version of the Stout Scarab, it’s roughly the same size as the Kia Soul or Scion xB. Feb. 5: VWoA appointed David Detweiler to serve as its executive vice president and general counsel. He earned his law degree at the University of Virginia. David Geanacopoulos, who received the EPA’s stinging letters to VWoA, becomes senior executive vice president for public affairs and public policy. He’ll focus on government relations from a downtown Washington DC office. Feb. 4: Audi submitted a proposal to the California Air Resources Board outlining a plan to fix its 3.0-liter TDI diesel models. It acknowledged that this engine’s defeat devices caused excess emissions. VW/Audi believes a software update will solve the problem. Feb. 3: The first European VW diesel model now receiving the firm’s emissions fix: the 2.0-liter TDI Euro 5 Amarok pickup.
