VW’s Remedy for its 3.0-liter Diesel Engine Near
May 10: Bloomberg News reports that VW is ironing out an agreement to fix approximately 85,000 U.S.-market Audi, Porsche and VW vehicles powered by emissions-cheating turbocharged V-6 engines.Software changes and possibly a new catalytic converter are part of the mix that should address American emissions and durability concerns.
Audi developed this larger TDI. It’s different from the 2.0-liter TDI that’s the center of a massive clean-diesel scam. The V-6 TDI has a timing device that controls the exhaust-cleaning system. The EPA says it’s an illegal defeat device. VW has set aside funds to cover the upcoming recall of Audi A6, A7, and A8 cars; Q5 and Q7 SUVs; plus the Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg SUVs.
VW’s April Sales Slide 9.6 Percent, Audi’s Rise 5.8 Percent
May 3: U.S. sales of VW vehicles for April 2016 (27,112) dropped about 3,000 units compared with April 2015 (30,009). Beetle, Passat, Jetta and Golf models each lost about 1,000 units. The Tiguan CUV, however, posted a 58.4-percent increase (3,804 vs. 2,402). VW cites intentional lower fleet sales.
Audi posted a gain (17,801 vs. 16,8270). This makes 64 the number of straight monthly increases. The new A4 posted a promising start—2,983 delivered. The new Q7 also pitched in (2,472). Audi’s most popular vehicle is the Q5 (3,991).
VW Unveils New Gas-Sipping 1.5-liter TSI Evo Engine
April 29 Vienna: VW plans European introduction of a revised EA211 engine. Now at 1.5-liters, it’s related to the 1.4-liter turbocharged gas mill used in the European Golf and U.S. Jetta and Jetta hybrid. With a longer stroke, more power, wider torque band, higher compression ratio, and variable-vane turbocharger, it’s also more efficient. The fuel injection system’s pressure is 5,075 psi, there’s a Miller combustion cycle and cylinder-on-demand feature. The latter can shut off two middle cylinders under light throttle loads reports Wards Auto.
