Oct. 27 Santa Monica, CA: Volkswagen’s longtime-coming American-made midsize crossover had its debut party at the California terminus of Route 66. With three-row seating and child-seat friendly interior, it is said to be roomier than Ford’s Explorer. It’s even larger than the Touareg. Unlike the latter SUV, the Atlas’ architecture is based on the current Golf’s. That means there’s a space-saving transverse power plant. Slim roof pillars make outdoor views bigger too. When the Atlas arrives in showrooms next spring, buyers will have a choice: either a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mill and two-wheel drive or a 3.6-liter VR6 and 4Motion. Options include a version of Audi’s brilliant Virtual Cockpit.
