2019 VW JETTA SNEAK PEEK
Dec. 12: VW released renderings and specs for its upcoming all-new bread-and-butter Jetta compact sedan. As depicted, its silhouette apes the larger European coupe-like Arteon. The Jetta’s exterior sports clean lean lines with a noticeable shoulder ridge.
Beneath the new look, the Jetta employs the current Golf’s modular toolkit or MQB. It’s also nearly two inches longer and an inch wider than the current Jetta. Since it shares the Golf’s platform, expect a complete suite of driver-assist gear.
Under the clam-like hood, VW will install one of three turbocharged direct-injection gas engines: 1.4 liter, 1.8 liter and 2.0 liter. A six-speed manual or an eight-speed conventional automatic routes power to the front wheels.
Inside, the Jetta moves upscale borrowing the Golf’s splendid driver-focused environment. Under the rear lid, there’s a large cargo bay—a tradition that began with the 1980 Jetta.
VW will unveil 2019 Jetta next month at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
VW DIESEL EMISSIONS CHEATING CONSPIRATOR OLIVER SCHMIDT SENTENCED, FIRED
Judge Sean Cox sentenced Oliver Schmidt, who ran VW’s American environmental and engineering office in Auburn Hills, MI, to seven years in prison and a $400,000 fine. Meanwhile, VW fired Schmidt citing his criminal offense. Schmidt, however, claims he was following company orders.
U.S. authorities charged eight current or former VW executives with crimes. Schmidt was nabbed last January in Miami. Engineer, James Liang, was sentenced to 40 months in prison and a fine of $200,000 last August. Five of those accused of conspiring in VW’s diesel emissions skirting haven’t been arrested because Germany doesn’t extradite its citizens. Italian Zaccheo Giovanni Pamio, an Audi diesel engine guru, has been arrested.
