The station wagons from Volkswagen won’t return for the 2020 model year. VWoA announced it’s pulling the plug on production of the SportWagen this month. It will continue making the all-wheel-drive Alltrack until the end of this year. VW claims sales of its taller Tiguan and Atlas prove most Americans prefer SUV-like vehicles. Expect an Atlas Cross Sport two-row crossover in a few months. A crossover slated to fill a niche below the Tiguan arrives in 2021. Plus, VW plans an ID. Crozz electric crossover.

Since 1966 when VW introduced the Type 3 Squareback in the USA, VW sold a line of subcompact, compact or midsize station wagons including the 411/412, Dasher, Quantum, Fox, Passat, Jetta and Golf. One ad dared women to buy a 1970s Dasher wagon out of wedlock.
