Jan. 20, 2021: VW’s headquarters announced it ended production Golfs for the U.S. market last week. It expects its inventory of 2021 model-year vehicles built at its Mexican plant will sustain sales of the hatchback through this year. The Golf name will continue for the 2022 model year when VW intros the Mk 8 Golf GTI and Golf R this fall.
The now departing 2021 Golf TSI has a thrifty 1.4-liter turbocharged engine with either an eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. Pricing starts at $23,195 plus destination.
VW discontinued production of U.S.-bound Golf wagons during Dec. 2019. It claims it sold nearly 2.5 million Golf models in the U.S. since the first one (Rabbit) in December 1974.
