VW’s long-wheelbase Tiguan is now the brand’s American Brot und Butter. Since its introduction at the 2017 Detroit auto show, the bigger 2018 Tiguan won over lots of people with its family hauling capacity. Worldwide, the Tiguan (short and long) is VW’s top selling model.
VW claims the freshened 2022 Tiguan offers more value in a familiar package. The engine and transmission continue largely unchanged. In contrast, the revamped front bumper and altered grille—illuminated with chrome-like effect on upmarket models—are flanked by LED headlights. The face apes the larger Atlas Cross Sport.
At the tail, there are new graphics between the LED taillights. Tiguan lettering between the lamps echoes other recently introduced VW models. You have a choice of eight exterior colors with spiffier 17-20-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, VW’s Digital Cockpit (8-inch base/10-inch upgrade) and heated front seats are standard. Second-tier and higher versions get VW’s MIB3 infotainment systems with wireless phone charging and wireless App-Connect. Higher trims get ventilated front thrones, heated steering wheels, and Climatronic Touch interfaces (HVAC). R-Line models get leather-wrapped steering wheels with touch islands. Contrasting stitching adds a premium touch to some Tiguans.
The full IQ.Drive driver assist suite is standard on all but base trim. The latter, however, has Front Assist plus optional assist upgrade. 4Motion AWD is optional on all Tiguans, which come in four trim levels. Expect the 2022 Tiguan at your dealer during the third quarter of 2021.
