VW's Not So Small Blunder: CEO Says VW Didn't Lie, CARB and EPA Reject Diesel Fixes
Jan 10: After VW CEO Matthias Mueller told the press that VW was sorry for the umpteenth time at the firm’s pre-Detroit auto show Group Night, his comments to NPR contradicted VW’s penitent tone. Mueller said the diesel problem was technical not ethical; claimed VW did not lie. VW attributes Mueller’s blunder to context (it was packed an noisy in the offstage interview area—see photo) and language (English isn’t his native tongue). Nonetheless this slip, led many to argue that arrogance is still a VW corporate value. Jan. 12: The California Air Resources Board rejected VW’s proposed fixes for its 2.0-liter TDI diesels. CARB said VW’s submissions were incomplete, substantially deficient and fall far short of meeting legal requirements. No new deadline or details were mentioned. Jan. 13: Mueller and VW brand chief Herbert Diess met with the EPA’s Gina McCarthy in Washington. The one-hour meeting resulted in a brief airy note from the EPA that assured the public that the EPA and VW were working toward a solution. Thus nearly four months after the dirty diesel scandal broke, VW still hasn’t produced a resolution that meets a variety of concerns. We’ve also seen that VW still doesn’t get American culture. For instance, one insider told the Autoist that Americans like to shame people, whereas Germans bristle at this rude behavior. Also notions of privacy vary. This is one reason why several state attorneys are peeved at VW. The firm hasn’t supplied emails related to the case, yet VW maintains it is cooperating with investigators.
